Question:

Convincing my mom?

Okay, she's STILL not letting me get a hamster. This is what she says...

"We don't need another pet in the house right now and you're just gonna have to be content with Cody for now (my dog)."

I said...

"Petsmart has let's you return the hamster within two weeks if things don't work out. And you KNOW I could take care of one. And they don't stink at all. I have NOTHING to do this summer and a hamster, plus Cody, would keep me busy! AND, it would kept in MY room."

The answer was STILL no. Can you think of any other things to say to her that might make her change her mind? Like facts, anything! Thanks.

  1. At dinner, or when you're in the car, whip out a few facts like these:

    Mom, did you know that....

    Hamsters have no bellybuttons

They have 4 toes in front and 5 toes in back

Their teeth never stop growing (which is why I will keep wood blocks in its cage to ensure healthy teeth)

A hamster can run up to 8 miles on their wheel a night

Once a hamster is pregnant, they only stay that way for 16 days and can have up to 20 babies

They can only see 6 inches ahead of them which is why their sense of hearing and smelling is so good

They can hold up to 18 grams of food in each cheek pouch

  2. Just keep going at it and going at it!

What I did ( this is what really convinced my mom ) when I wanted to get my new kitte Baby doll,

Was I acted sevearly depressed for A LONG time when she said 'no'.

Before long guess what! I GOT BABY DOLL as you can see by my picture above.

Try that, and I mean act REALLY depressed.

Instead of doing stuff that you usually do sit in your room in your bed under your covers ( some fake tears would also work ).

ADD: Hey, Love is an Animal, did you get your Guinea pigs name off of Guys and Dolls?

Cuz I used to have two hermit crabs named Adelaide and Nathan ( if you have seen the musical you would get it ).

    LOL!

Oh, and at the moment I have two goldfish named Sky and Sarah.

  3. Honestly, I have nothing good to say about hamsters. But email me at emily111897@yahoo.com for stuff about guinea pig

  4. The good things about hampsters are if you only have one and you keep the cage clean no they will not smell. If they dont have a wheel they are pretty quiet. And they only have about a 2 to 3 year lifespan so its not a big commitment. That usually gets parents right there. But what you also need to think about is like was said above is what if the hampster gets sick. Who will take her/him to the vet and pay for the vet bill and the medicine. I know they are small but sometimes the vet bills can be outrageous. My last rat that got sick cost me $33 just to be seen and the meds totaled $70. Not to mention just two weeks ago I had to take Sheepy to the vet. She had lice and rattles. The antibiotics with the iermvectin and the vets bill totaled $80. So yes having one is not that expensive and its not a lifelong commitment but if you dont have the money in case your little furball was to get sick you need to rethink getting one.

  5. Well, I'm sure you already tried telling her a lot of facts about hamsters because you did a lot of research, right?  Also, it might help if you didn't give the impression that returning it would be an option; you have to be committed to a pet, and responsible parents will not let you get one unless they're sure you will be.

But who's going to buy stuff for the hamster and take it to the vet?  If your mom doesn't want another pet in the house, then you have to respect her wishes.  It wouldn't be fair to make a pet live in a home where someone (especially a parent) doesn't want it.

  6. Just a little warning, they smell pretty bad. But they are super-easy to take care of. You just make sue it has fresh food and water and it's fine.

  7. LOL Erin, hamsters do stink! =D but its all good!

    Facts:

Hamsters can be taught how to come by name.  (just like a mini dog)

Dwarf hamsters live about 1.5 to 2 years but can live to be 4.  (you wont have it forever)

Hamsters do not need to be cleaned as they will clean themselves without difficulty. (less work!)

They are solitary, meaning they love humans but cannot live with other hamsters if not socilized at birth. (no more than 1)

    Here are some websites:

    ADD:

Wow Pom, LOL, maybe i should try that for being able to atleast foster a dog from dogsindanger.com....hmmm!

Also, when i wanted my guinea pig this is what i did:

I told my mom, if i could prove responsible for 2 weeks of all my pets every single day (that means food, water, play time, walks, bathing, etc) then i could get my guinea pig. LOL she didnt believe i could do it so she agreed, but guess what? I did it. Say something that if you do ________ (something your mom will never think you will do<<<) then do it, she will have to follow through LOL!

  8. Hamsters aren't a summer long commitment first of all.

If your mom trusted you then she would immediatly say yes.

Tell your mom you want a snake instead (pretend your serious though), she might think about a hamster.

  9. The last poster said it all - about her rat and it's vet bill.  2 months ago my female rat had a mammory tumor that shot up overnight - it was almost as big as her and weighed 1 gram more than she did.  $500 later she is home and healthy......but the point is....the 10 dollar pet got to be quite expensive.

Might I add...i AM the mom and always wanted a rat - my kid thought I was nuts.......the point being - if you take in a pet of any kind - you have to be prepared for the vet bills in the event they arise.  My rat was over 2 yrs old.....they only live to be about 3.....so I took her in to be euthanized......but the vet looked at her and said since it seemed to not be attached to any organs, the surgery would be costly but could be done.  I had just received my tax refund so I went for it.  Sadly, if it happened now, I would have had to have her put down, the money is just not their.

Pets are not toys - they are a commitment.....some commitments are shorther than others......many are longer.  I would forgo just about anything if it meant saving the life of my pets......but gas bills and food aren't an option.

Your mom may be right but ask her (CALMLY) why she is so against this new pet.......try to have a calm discussion.  My son is 18 now but we went thur many a year with the I want this, I want that and being the bad-guy mom....I had to explain I can't afford it.

Maybe if you could talk with your mom as to why she is so against it and then explain why you are so for it.  My personal opinion is a hamster is a living breathing thing but a very low-maintenance pet.
