  1. I think you should adjust your expectations since your parents are probably going through enough financial hardship on your behalf.  Either chip in the extra money or find something less expensive. You don't NEED a super expensive laptop- you WANT that. You can get a laptop that will fulfill the basic needs of a student for less than $500, less than $200 if purchased refurbished or used.

Also- what is it about the laptop you want that makes it more expensive?  Can you find it elsewhere cheaper?  You might have to change brands or lose a feature but let's be real here- what do you NEED verses what do you WANT?  Also, if it's programs that you're adding on that makes it expensive (say, Microsoft Office Professional) those can add an extra $200 easily and as a student you can buy the software much cheaper (at my university we can buy MS Office Pro for $79!)  Maybe that will help make the price difference.

Some places have student purchase programs that sell computers at a discount. Even your bookstore might have such a program through Dell or Gateway, perhaps even Mac.

So keep this in mind- your parents are offering a very nice gift for you and you're trying to stretch it just a tad farther. In my family that would be seen as very ungrateful and a bit selfish.  If it were me I would chip the extra $200 in or find a cheaper alternative. With the exception of Mac, there aren't many laptops out there that cannot be found cheaper if you change brands, processors, or software.

ADDITION: Saying you don't want any other laptop sounds a little demanding to me. What is it about THIS laptop that cannot be substituted?  You go on about what you did for your parents, and I'm glad you were a good student, but I bet they sacrificed a LOT for you.  So chip in your share or pick something else.  Seems to me that the other answers agree...  If I were your parent, you would pay the extra $200 or get what I was willing to pay for or nothing at all.  I don't play those games with my kids, irregardless what they think they did for me.  Most kids are blind to the things their parents do for them until they themselves are parents.  The sacrifices we make, monetarily, emotionally, physically, chronologically- are huge.  Appreciate what you are getting and do so with grace!!

  2. If you really Want this specific computer and won't settle for anything else. Then you may need to come up with the $200.00 yourself. Your Parents probably know that you could use or need a computer for collage, but with money being tight for everyone these days, it may prudent on your part to settle on one that will be good enough for now. Unless you can give really good reasons why you would "Need" that particular computer rather than just "Want" it. Your parents I'm sure want you to get a good education but they do not want to go broke in the process. Good Luck.

  3. i think you know more about computers and laptop then your parents therefore tell them an expensive laptop will last way more then a cheap laptop and tell them all the advantages you can think of, also your mom did say she would already buy you a laptop and its for the university which is very important and you deserve it after you graduated with honors your mom should understand and if she still says no then you go get a part time job or something
