how do i convince my parents to get TiVo. cuz i am a big tv person and everyone recommends i should get it. i watch many shows. i have a favorite show on like everday sometimes two. and theres even sometimes my favorites shows run into each other and run at the same time and ic annot watch both.

right now im using video tapes to record my missed shows. also i also have a life other than tv, like i have sports and school to deal with too. but the problem with videotapes are they are a hassle to keep track of and when i rewatch them they are ususally all not static-ky but like they have those wierd lines on them from overrecording too much. i'm sure that's bad for your eyes too.

any ideas?

  1. I think that you should explain why your parents should want TiVo and not just yourself. Are your Parents big Tv fans as well? If so then it will be easier to persuade.

  2. Well, you could explain to them that you will spend less time watching the same amount of TV because you're skipping through the commercials.  Offer to do some work around the house to 'earn' it.  And explain to them that you promise to not lose focus on your other responsibilities and that they can take it away if your grades drop.

  3. Hi Slinkies!!,

Tell your mom you will spend less time watching because you can fast forward through commercials and an hour show will only be about 40 minutes.

We prefer TiVo because of simplicity of use. The schedule is always correct because it is updated every day. I can program TiVo to record from out of town over the Internet. TiVo learns what you like and recommends shows that you might like. Often times we never would have known they were on. You can program an entire season of a given series with a single click and TiVo never forgets. You can tell TiVo you like someone or something and it will locate shows for you. For example if you tell it you like John Wayne it will watch for and record anything he is on.

With my series 2 and series 3 TiVo’s I can transfer recordings to my computer, edit them if desired then record them to a DVD.

You can also allow TiVo to share pictures and music from your computer. It will play the music and slide shows on your TV.

I could go on and on about TiVo. There is one downside and that is the monthly (you can pay yearly if you want) fee.

To learn all about TiVo check their web site here - https://www3.tivo.com

Check the TiVo user forum here - http://www.tivocommunity.com

The TiVo Community Store often has good bargains for TiVo’s or accessories. Check them for current pricing along with your local Best Buy - http://store.tivocommunity.com/merchant....

You need either a phone line or internet connection for TiVo to download software updates and program information.

I hope this helps you convince your mom.

  4. The points you have made in your posts are the points you should make to your parents. But also think about why they won't purchase it. Perhaps, they can't afford it,  perhaps, they don't know a whole lot about Tivo. There could be many reasons. Have they told you why they won't purchase it?

  5. What your mom said actually makes sense. It'll be a lot easier to record shows, so you'll probably end up recording more shows that what you're already doing now, which means more time watching them.

And those 'lines' aren't really bad for your eyes. Certainly not any worse than the act of watching tv itself.
