Convincing sail for Bribon and Quantum Racing on Day 1 of 2011 Region of Murcia Trophy at Cartagena
Spain’s Bribon and the American Quantum Racing had a convincing finish on the first day of 2011 Region of Murcia Trophy at Cartagena in Spain. The local favourites, Bribon crossed the
finish line behind Russia’s Synergy Russian Sailing Team, who are known for their strong start, to the first windward mark and finished second on the board followed by the American boat.
The weather conditions on Day 1 were lighter but unlike the Practice Race day, the breeze let the sailors have a complete race. The wind was blowing around five to seven knots over the
Cartagena waters which was enough to set sail.
The Russian team led to the first windward mark followed by Bribon and finished on top. The current leader of 2011 Audi MedCup Circuit, Quantum Racing crossed the finish line behind the
Spanish yacht, while the 2011 Region of Sardinia Trophy winners Audi Sailing Team Powered by All4One began their run with a fourth place in the standings.
While speaking to the local media Bribon skipper Gonzalo Araújo said, “It was a tough day out there but we sailed well in all departments. We´ve also been a bit lucky because days like
today are complicated. We are happy because it was the first race and it was pretty easy for something to go wrong and start the trophy with the wrong foot.”
He added, “We did not start well, but we caught a couple shifts and we managed to keep a second place. We spent the rest of the day trying to catch Synergy, but keeping an eye on the boats
behind us. We controlled our position well during the whole race. We have to be really positive about what we did today.”
The overall standings at the end of Day 1 of 2011 Region of Murcia Trophy at Cartagena are given below:
