Question:

Convulsions after smoking marijuana? Help?

I've been a moderate marijuana smoker for about 4 years, minus one 6 month break from smoking. Over the last few months I've been having convulsions sometimes when I smoke. It started out as uncontrolable hand twitches that I didn't think about since they only lasted a few seconds. Then maybe a couple head twitches or two...I think a couple friends have witnessed me twitch before, not sure. But recently I've been having full body convulsions. It happens when I get light headed...but I also hold my breathe for a long time when smoking. Does this have something to do with it?

I don't have convulsions all the time...they just happen sometimes. Recently it's become a 1-2 times ever couple of weeks thing...and for awhile I just thought it was my body's reaction to being really high...but it just hit me today that this could be something else.

The only significant things that have happened this year is my grandfather dieing, me moving into an apartment by myself (but not for the first time), and I've been drinking beer more frequently.

However, the last couple years have been a little intense, as well.

  1. although marijuana is reasonably tame, its still a drug.  it effects the brain and will effect different people differently.  it might be worth seeing a doctor, but the obvious solution is to stop smoking.

  2. You need to see a doctor.

A doctor is not going to call the police on you if you tell them you smoke pot.  They will advise you to stop smoking, of course, but they will also want to find out what is going on.  Convulsions are usually neurological, you really need medical attention to make sure it doesn't get worse.

edited to add: good on you for seeing a doctor so quickly! He sounds like a cool dude.

  3. I would lay off the smoking for a bit and do go see the Dr.

That said, it's possible that you're having a bad reaction to the chemical nutrients in the weed itself. I don't know where you get your marijuana, but many growers don't flush the plants properly and some chemical residue can remain on the buds. If you can check to see if you stuff is organically grown that'd be a start.

You should also consider switching to a vaporizer which won't be as harsh to smoke.

And if you're in a state that allows it, do get your Medical Marijuana card.

  4. okay, ive been a smoker for about the same amount of time, no always everyday but just about for the last 2-3 years.sometimes i get body twitches but i believe its from stress, and holding my body weird and tense when im doing things.the minor twitches could be the same but th body convulsions sound like a problem, do you black out when this happens or are you coherent?i think it could be a lack of oxygen or something.it could just be stress, try to stop smoking and see if it still happens, if you feel you should see a dr. because its something serious then dont hesitate, the dr cannot report you to the police or anything if u tell him u smoke because of patient/dr confidentiality.i hope i helped, goodluck!

  5. You're lucky it didn't kill you. You need to see a counselor to find out why you are engaging in risky illegal behavior, Apparently you haven't learned your lesson and are continuing to smoke even though you have gotten a severe warning. The next time could be your last. You are damaging your brain.
