Cookie Table at Italian Functions?

Does anyone know the meaning behind the tradition of creating a cookie table at an italian occassion: shower, wedding, etc.? Thx

It's a great way of letting people help them selves while having a chat and allowing them to take there own - I think.

It's a social thing - Italian service in England means when you put all the food on the table so they can all help them selves - i think its a very civil and sociable thing to do
