Cooking/eating insects?

Question

On Friday I was talking with a coworker when I saw a Japanese beetle flying around. I mentioned that I hated those bugs. He said they are harmless, and he said that he used to eat them back home, in the Philippines. He also said he used to eat grasshoppers. They catch the insects and cook them with onion and garlic. I think he was kidding around, but could it be true?

It's absolutely true!

MANY cultures catch, cook and eat insects of all varieties.  Beetles, ants, crickets, scorpions....the list is as endless as the means in which to cook and eat them.

Oh, and don't knock it till you try it.  I've had chocolate covered ants & fried grasshoppers and both are quite delectable!

Grasshoppers, locusts, whichity-grubs...ants.  And those are the things you "know about".

      What about the bugs you don't know about that is in your processed foods and prepared meals?(the government has standards which ALLOWS for X amount of insect parts(and rodent droppings and dirt) per million).  You have been eating bugs since the day you were born.  Heard of earthworms being used to bulk up the protein in burger patties at you favorite fast food chain?  Kitchens can be a scary place (even in high end hotels).

totaLLy true. i come from the Philippines and we do have special restaurants for those 'types of delicacies'. :) grasshoppers, locusts, crickets. . . it just depends on how you cook it, but usually, they taste just fine. :)
