what am I supposed to use to fry fish? is it a certain type of season I have to use?

  1. when i fry my catfish, i use cornmeal for the breading and i use cajun seasoning salt and also a few dashes of black pepper...or if you like it on more of a spicy side...use cyenne pepper too.


  2. for best flavor just use salt and balck pepper on a deep fry oil pan for a whole fish like tilapia, for a fillet used salt ,black pepper and regular flour,for breading simple is always bettr and this tells you some one who knows better than any seafood chef. here is a picture. im especialist in seafood. even some restaurant owners ask me how do i prepare some food, they have tried what i cook.

  4. Here is just one tasty method to pan-fry fish.  

    Choose a good white fish such as Tilapia or Orange Roughy, or maybe a catfish.  

    Part of getting a good fried fish is the seasoning but there are so many to choose from I'd suggest figuring out what flavors you like on chicken and starting there.   Spicy seasonings work well.  This gets mixed with the breading or sprinkled on top as you fry the fish.  Use plenty of seasoning if you use breading because the breading dilutes the flavors.  

    One other "trick" is to use panko (Japanese) bread crumbs.  Find these in the cooking aisle of your local food store alongside other breadcrumbs.  They make things crispier, but cornmeal is good too.

    On occasion I eat fried fish without the breading but it is more oily this way.

    Heat a pan or skillet and add oil up to about 1/4" deep when after it gets warm/hot.  Let the oil heat up before adding the fish.  I use a combination of olive oil, butter, and about 2-3 tablespoons of chili oil for spicey warmth, which you would find in the oriental food section of your grocery store.

    Use the three dip method (the same method works with chicken and pork chops).



    - Make an egg wash using 1 egg and about 1 cup of milk.  Beat together well.

    - Pat-dry fish with paper-towel

    - dredge through flour,

    gently knock off excess

    -  Dip fish in egg wash,

    drip off the excess

    - dredge through breading mixture,

    gently knock off excess.

    Fry in a medium to meduim-hot skillet until flaky and cooked through.

    Another way to judge doneness is that the crust will have browned but not blackened at all.  Practice make perfect.  

    Watch the oil.  Once the oil is hot enough you should be able to turn down the heat, but since the oil cools as you add the fish, you may have to turn up the heat as you add the fish and turn it down as the fish heats up.  

    If the oil splatters too much, your oil is too hot but it should sizzle..  

    Cooking time should be about 5-7 minutes (estimated) per side for 3/4" thick fish.  Serve immediately with Salad and some bread for a complete meal.  

    For a great-tasting and easy "gourmet" topping to the fish you might try combining 1 cup of Balsamic vinegar and 1 cup of orange juice in a sauce pan.  Boil it until it's 1/2 of that or 1 cup, stirring occasionally.  Comes out like a syrup and takes about 1/2 to 1 hour but is well worth the time and effort.  Works well for pork chops also.

    You'll need a tasty light fish...

    I recommend catfish, whiting, tilipia

    You will need fish fry mix.

    You can find an assortment of mixes in the supermarket.

    Coat your fish in the fish fry

    Heat up some oil in a pan

    Drop your fish in and fry on both sides.

    You can sprinkle your fish with some old bay, salt&pepper.

    EASY AS 1,2,3!

  7. Old Bay Seasoning, Greek Spices or Cajun Spices work well with fish.  Personally, I like my fish broiled or pan fried.  A good nonstick skillet or cast iron works best.
