Cooking with a cast aluminum pot?

My wife and I were given a cast aluminum pot. The metal is much thicker than must pots, similar to a cast iron dutch oven. Is it designed for a specific type of cooking? The only instructions that came with it were the washing instructions.

  1. It sounds like its a cast aluminum Dutch oven. Did it not come in any packaging?

If it is a cast iron Dutch oven, then usage is similar to as with a cast iron Dutch Oven

  2. a good heavy pot like that is great for stewing and braising meats, esp. tough cuts that take awhile to tenderize.  Even being heavy, I would not expect it to be that great for deep frying, as aluminum is  a willy-nilly heat conductor, and you may get hot and cold spots while cooking.  Try a soup, stew, fricasee, or smothered dish in it.
