  1. Five year olds are absolutley able to understand cups and tablespoons, etc.

When I cook with my four year old nephew, I use pink measuring spoons and blue measuring cups (the color doesn't matter) but when I read off of the recipe "2 cups of sugar" I ask, "ok, so do we use the blue cups or the pink spoons?" just to help enforce the idea a little easier, and he understands just fine.

  2. Check out a kid's cookbook for ideas.  Usborne Books has some great ones, including the First Cookbook and Children's Book of Baking.  See them at http://www.ubah.com/g2687

  3. At age five students are only expected to be measuring with non-standard units of measure.  For example they may use teddy bear counters to figure out how long a string is or use snap cubes to find the capacity of a large cup.

However, you need to explain that when cooking there is a certain amount of each ingredient that needs to be used and the final product would not be the same if you vary from the recipe.  It would be acceptable to pre-measure the ingredients and have the children simply help you mix them, but it would also be ok to begin teaching the names of the different measuring tools.

  4. i always remember a TEAspoon because its TEAneey weeny...

  5. Go by cups, do not underestimate them, it may take saying more than twice but they will get it in the end.
