We're going to Germany next fall and will be in the Eifel region. Can anyone recommend any castles to visit in that region that offer tours?

  1. The only one I've actually been to and can recommend is Burg Eltz.  I loved it; descendents of the original family still live in part of the castle and they have tours of the other part.  But be prepared for a LONG walk from the parking are to the castle itself.

    Here are some links:

  2. My personal idea as to the Eifel is you don't concentrate on the castle ruins, but rather on the fascinating landscape with those tiny lakes scattered between the mountains. Can you imagine they came into existence by vulcano eruptions some 10,000 years ago? But still, they are the remnants of a very old geological age, consisting of vulcano eruptions and the formations caused by the last ice age.

And while you're in the Eifel, forget the castles! Take a drive on the Nürburgring, Europe's fastest race track! You can do it in a safe "race track taxi". It will cost you more than visiting three or four castles, but it's worth it! Mind it's not a roundabout; there will be a real driver on the wheel, and it will be real driving up to 320 km/h. You might crash. (But don't worry, they won't go to the limit.)

  3. you got to see them castles in the river Rhine valley, they are famous and also some Eifel castles like Burg Eltz and Satzvey.

there are so many that I just can't say where to go first, also needed to know where exactly you stay.

I've given you a link below where you can have a look over all the castles in that area. go to maps.google.de or com and look at the area, its not very big but you can make up your mind where to go and make a route.

    have fun

    Bernd
