I used to work at a petstore and I would have to say ferrets are the most amuzing pet that I dealt with.  They are so much more playful and silly than a rat or hamster.  But even with their scent glands removed (which most of them have these removed)  they still stink! If you can get over their smell than they are really fun.  You keep them in cages like a rat or hamster and let them out when you want to play with them. They can live up to several years so you don't have to keep buying a new one.  Rat and hamsters usually just live up to 2 to 3 years.  But between a rat or hamster, I always liked rats better. Out of all the rats I dealt with, I never got bit once.  They are really sweet animals and can become somewhat affectionate.  Hamsters were a different story.  There are hamsters that don't bite but most of them that I tried to handle did. A lot of people just choose them over rats because they are cuter. I think rats are just as cute.  All of the animals you mentioned above are all sold at most pet stores and all require pretty much the same amount of care.  You should handle them daily, change their bedding out weekly, and make sure they have food and water. Just go to your local pet store (Petsmart or Petco) and just ask to play with the animals you like.  Each animal should have it's own care sheet which has some information about the animal. Choose the one you like the most.
