Question:

Coolant Overflow Tank Repair Question???

I have a crack in my coolant overflow tank on my 1996 mitsubishi eclipse. I know that I should replace the tank itself but need a temporary fix. I bought a plastic welding compound that is rated up to 200 F. Should this be sufficient to hold the hot coolant overflowing from the radiator.

I also realized that the coolant in the tank was boiling. I am not sure if there was some air trapped in the radiator or not. I opened up the pressure cap and refilled it with coolant...waiting...and topping it off as the water went down. I then plan to refill the overflow tank and pray that it is still not boiling.

Overall with those temperatures should I be safe with the epoxy. It dried hard and bonded to the plastic well. My only concern is for the temperature.

  1. I once tried J.B.WELD on my Intrepid which had a crack on the top/left portion of the plastic.Permanent fix.One other suggestion. You may want to check the thermostat.A bad one could cause it to overheat.

  2. Change the thermstat and flush the engine while your at it.
