Coolavanny Bert’s racing career in danger
J .Gardner’s 2-year-old speedy hound, Coolavanny Bert, is unlikely to make his way back to the racecourse, as he sustained a broken hock following his participation in third heat of the Williamhill.com Classic at Sunderland last weekend.
The black dog stepped into the mega event with a lot of hopes. Considering his enormous talent, the bookies were not reluctant to declare him hot favourite for the 450 metres race on Saturday night.
After starting the affair from the blue box, the dashing hound did a wonderful job to lead the race for a while. However, he was checked badly afterwards and as a result, failed to complete the run. Following a terrible injury, the hound is due to go through
an operation, but his owner-trainer does not expect him to run in future.
“He’s happy in himself and has eaten up. But the vet at Sunderland seemed to think it was a complex injury. Obviously we’ll know more after he’s been x-rayed and operated on but I’m not expecting him to race again,” said Gardner.
Coolavanny Bert won plenty of major events throughout his career. Prior to his appearance at Sunderland, the maverick runner was seen in the finale of Williamhill.com Greyhound Derby at Wimbledon, where he finished third behind Blonde Snapper in the £125000
event.
Blonde Snapper has already been retired to stud and if Gardner’s charge fails to recover, it will be a huge setback for the greyhound racing fraternity.
Coolavanny Bert collected plenty of praise following his magnificent victory in the Primus Telecom Puppy Derby in February this year. The rampant hound, who was trained by K. Findlay, was mighty impressive in the finale of the £10000 at Henlow, where the
going was -70.
Despite the fact that the conditions were not easy for racing, the March-10 son of Wheres Pedro out of Mercury Queen maintained the highest standards of speed and stamina to ensure an easy win.
The superstar hound has registered 14 victories so far in his career, including three excellent hat-tricks. His supporters are hoping for some good news, but Coolavanny Bert’s racing career looks to be over.
