Copenhagen attacker delighted with side's effort against Barcelona
Copenhagen winger Jesper Gronkjaer says that his side’s performance against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League was one to remember.
The clubs faced off in a group stage match at the Parken Stadium on Tuesday, 2 November, where La Liga giants Barca were forced to settle for a point against the Danish champions.
The visitors took the lead in the 31st minute through FIFA World Player of the Year Lionel Messi’s shot which went in off the post. However, the lead lasted barely a minute as Copenhagen’s Brazilian midfielder Claudemir Domingues de Souza pounced on a cross
delivered by Gronkjaer.
Copenhagen continued to take the game to the Spanish champions and, while they could not find a way past Victor Valdes for a second time, they were delighted to pick up a point.
'Massive achievement for club'
Gronkjaer told UEFA’s official website that: "This draw's a massive achievement for the club, the fans and all the players. We're in a fantastic position in the group. It's like a dream right now."
Barcelona are still strong favourites to top the group as they have eight points from four games, but Copenhagen are right behind them with seven points and are strongly placed to progress into the last 16. A single point from their next match against Russian
champions Rubin Kazan will be enough to book their place in the knockout stages of the tournament.
Gronkjaer added that: "We've still got two games, of course, but we're aiming for second place. It's fantastic — it's a good feeling.
"Like every team in Europe, we want to make our home ground a fortress where we can't be unbeaten and where teams come knowing it'll be hard for them.
"Of course, when you play against teams like Barcelona it's going to be hard. We're never going to be better than Barcelona, but I think as a team we were fantastic."
