Should you own the original and copy it for your own use, then its fine, also if you have permission from the rights owner its ok

of course it is... its only legal if the material is copied with the copyroight owners consent, or if there is no copyroght claimed on the content. otherwise its plain and simple: illegal.

It woudl be legitmate for some to resell DVD's they had themselves bought, although Id suspect the EULA most comonaies try to demand and enforce would suggest that could also be illegal, but I reckon they would struggle to enforce it.
