  1. If your at school find out if the school has a program called Dragon Naturally speaking.

Dragon Naturally speaking is a voice recognition program, that you can launch programs, create documents and reports, emails etc, and manage your desktop all by voice, so you wont have to type, or worry about correcting spelling mistakes etc. And is being used by professional businesses.

My daughter used Dragon Naturally speaking when she was studying. Which she said helped her heaps, and saved her time in hand writing, you just have to be careful of words that sound the same as in flower or flour etc.

Ask you class teacher when writing notes on the white/black board to do each paragraph in different colours, so if you have to copy notes from the board your able to keep up. (this really does help).

Don't be afraid to ask for an extension on assignments, but only when you have to (don't make a habit of it).

Speaking of assignments always start on assignments as soon as possible NEVER LEAVE IT TILL THE LAST MINUTE. Most teachers are happy to check on your progress if you ask.

Spelling mistakes, if your unsure of the correct spelling, underline or circle the word, so the teacher knows your unsure if the word is spelt correctly. Also keep a copy of the most common spelling mistakes, with you at all times. ( have included a link).

When doing tests/exams, ask if your allowed to take note paper in with you, if its a multi choice test, ask if you can mark the question sheet, this helps by crossing out the incorrect answers, usually leaving you one or two possible answers. Or you can ask for a verbal exam be done.

When reading take your time, and don't feel pressured into reading a loud to others if your not comfortable, then don't read out loud. However do practice reading a loud when your alone, so you gain some self confidence, and you can listen to the sound of the words.

Hope this helps you a little.

  2. There are MANY adaptations and bypass strategies to use to be successful academically. However, while it may not seem like it is, your question is very broad. What class(es) do you need techniques for? Is it for daily work, homework, tests? Is it for reading the textbook? Is it for writing papers? Are you in jr. high, high school, or college? That may make a difference in the answer also. If you want a tailored list, you can email me with a few more specifics. Then perhaps I can give you some ideas that will really help you.

  3. The information given by Georgie, is spot on and if you check the web sites she/he has given, then you will find that they know what they are talking about.

  4. It would help to know what area you need techniques, the severity of the dyslexia and so forth.  I found that using a strip of colored paper when reading helps keep me focused.
