  1. I agree with the above answers. However you might start with a book on basic electricity. It should explain the science involved in electric motors and generators.

Knowing something about electric devices can be both interesting and useful in life.

  2. Things with coils of wire and optionally magnets inside are used to convert between mechanical and electrical energy.

If you spin a magnet past a coil of wire, you create electricity.

if you alternate the direction of electricity in a coil of wire surrounding a magnet, you can make a magnet spin.

With two coils of wire, and no magnets, it's possible to treat one moving coil as a magnet for the same purposes.

Your car has: a starter motor, and an alternator.  Both of which have coils of wire inside.  The alternator is what recharges the car's battery as you drive.

  3. That's the Stator or field coil of the motor you found, on a car, it works in reverse to generate electricity from the engine.

Motors can use permanent magnets or copper coils fed with rectified AC or DC straight. This produces an electromagnet. When the Rotor in the middle is rotated, it generates electricity, but if electricity is supplied, it generates a magnetic field to spin as a motor.

    Find a good physics book.
