Question:

Copying files to new server...?

I have recently added a new file server. I transferred all of the shared folders/files and user profiles from the old server to the new one. I noticed a problem though...we have tons of databases and whatnot that have links to the full UNC path of the old file server.

I am going to rename the new server so that it has the same name as the old one so that I don't have to go searching through the many databases, documents, etc. and change the links.

I copied the folders a couple weeks ago, so there are files on the old server that have been updated since then. How can I copy only the new/updated files from the old server to the new one? I believe xcopy can do this, but I just want to make sure.

Also, would there be any problems with just renaming the new server to have the same name as the old one (I will obviously be taking down the old server first)?

  1. You can try to use xcopy indeed. The site bellow got an explanation about the command and its options

If you turn down the old server first you can use its name without any problem. just be sure to do that.
