Question:

Copyrights on flickr?

Is there any way that I can copyright all my images so that no one can download them or grab the HTML? If it helps, I have a pro account.

Until now all of my images have been up for grabs. I joined a website that lets you sell your work, and I figured that this is kind of redundant for people buying when you can just take them from my page.

  1. even on flickr you can do that. lock you photos so no one can download them. if they cant download them they are safe.

  2. When you put your image out in public, you need to do a couple things.  1) make them small ... like 600 x 400 @ 72 DPI

    2) water mark them in such a way, no one can use them and include your copyright notice in the watermark.

  3. Reduce the resolution of the images you upload, that way they cannot be reporduced beyond the size and resolution you set, like 680x440 pixels at 72dpi.  That's a large enough image to view on a webpage, but not large enough to make a decent 4x7 inch print.  Flickr doesn't have anything more than the standard copyright agreement you acknowledged when you signed up, so create your own watermarks and make sure your EXIF is tagged with the right info about your camera, your personal information, and where and when the photo was taken.  It still won't stop the determined, but it's about all you can do to stop anyone who will likely attempt to claim the image as their own.

The CC license agreement is found on the upload page as an option for use.  I wouldn't use it, I'm not a fan of CC.  They are not as inforceable as a standard © statement.  Flickr had some controversy with that several months to a year back, so I would be very leary of trusting Flickr with my serious work.

  4. To copyright them (and thus sue for damages) you need to register them as a collective work with the copyright office. You inherantly already have copyright to anything you take a photo of (granted with visible faces, you need a model release to sell them) but you can only sue for monetary damages if you have it registered. It's $30 to do it online (www.copyright.gov and form VA I do believe).

You can watermark them yea, but that really doesn't guarantee anything as anyone with Photoshop could probably clone it out. The HTML would be protected through Flickr so you wouldn't be able to change it or edit anything on that end (to my knowledge). Even so, people could do a screen capture.

  5. That was pretty neat!  How did you lock them?  I could download a spaceball.gif file that was nothing :)

    Can you share?

    Thanks Anafur

  6. you can set it so that only you can download the images. You go to you , then your account , then go to privacy and permissions and on downloads click on only you .  After that if someone tries to save as , they will get a blank spaceball .
