Corey Maggette thrilled to be a part of Michael Jordan’s Charlotte Bobcats – NBA Update
Corey Maggette’s NBA career has been more like a roller coaster ride. The 31 year old player has witnessed numerous ups and downs since the Seattle Super Sonics drafted him as the 13th overall pick in 1999.
However, over the years, he has failed to develop a star repute.
Corey had a poor last season with the Milwaukee Bucks, in which he tallied just 12.0 points per game. His averagei was way lower than his career stats so a shift was on the cards. However, it came in a most unusual way. Maggette
was on his way to Chicago for a friend’s wedding, when he was told that the Bucks had traded him to the Charlotte Bobcats and the veteran was more than happy to learn about the deal.
"It's not going to get as cold in Charlotte as it did in Milwaukee.”
Maggette had an ankle surgery in the off season last year and he wasn’t able to press full throttle in the season after. Reflecting on his experience at Milwaukee, he said
“I didn't really get the momentum I needed early on and Scott Skiles went with the guys that he was accustomed to playing. It was a different experience, but it was also an opportunity for me to grow, mature as a person and understand
the ups and downs of basketball. Now, the opportunity here in Charlotte, with what Paul Silas wants me to do, it's definitely a breath of fresh air. I'm going to try to excel and help this ballclub in any way I can."
Maggette has plenty of reasons to be happy. One, he has been assigned a starter role and is delighted to be back at his original position. However playing on Michael Jordan’s team is a thing that excites him most.
Charlotte head coach Paul Silas has had an open discussion with Maggette during which he was told that the franchise expects him to be the leader and it was the basic reason it was that the Bobcats got him in exchange for their
leading scorer Stephen Jackson. Silas told that Maggette was interested in playing as a starter, so the franchise decided to gave him the opportunity in order to make him comfortable and successful. However, in return Corey wouldn’t just have to score, but
will also have to carry the team and prove to be an on court leader.
After a spate of trades by Jordan, in the last year and a half, the Bobcats have shaped out to be one of the youngest teams in NBA and they desperately want Maggette to have an impact.
