Corey Main clinches Men’s 100m backstroke title – New Zealand SC Championships
Corey Main of Howick Pakuranga-CO clinched gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on initial day of the State 2012 New Zealand Short Course Championships at Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre in Wellington on Sunday, September 30.
The 17-year-old Main stifled hopes of his opponents in the four-lap backstroke discipline and went home swelling with pride after securing the title.
His incredible pace provided him competitive edge as he managed to outsmart his strongest challenger over the finishing end by clocking a phenomenal effort of 52.45 seconds for gold medal.
His top finish remained just 0.05 seconds ahead of Kurt Crosland of Neptune Swimming Club-OT, who followed him on the finishing blockade for silver medal by reporting a wonderful effort of 52.50 seconds.
Crosland was trailed by Cameron James of AquaGym Swim Team-CB, who stayed four body lengths apart and surfaced on the wall as third best finisher by clocking a nice time of 55.21 seconds.
Subsequently, fourth position of the race was obtained by Benjamin Gillies of North Shore Swimming-AK, who remained 0.76 seconds apart and surfaced on the finishing end with an effort of 55.97 seconds.
Gillies was trailed by Max Polianski of United Swimming Club-AK, who suffered a loss of only 0.13 seconds behind and posted a time of 56.10 seconds.
Sixth finest spot of the race was obtained by Julian Weir of Aquabladz Taranaki Swim Club-TR, who was 0.12 seconds behind and hit the wall with an effort of 56.22 seconds.
Subsequently, Weir was traced by Corneille Coetzee of Coast Swim Club-AK, who was 0.96 seconds behind and transpired on the finishing club as seventh best finisher by reporting an effort of 57.18 seconds.
Coetzee was followed by Daniel Hunter of Howick Pakuranga-CO, who failed to surpass any of his competitors. The 18-year-old Hunter remained 0.09 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and hit the wall with a timing of 57.27 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Main receive a huge round of applause from the audience for his scintillating form and said that he would continue his struggle to achieve the same at forthcoming swimming events.
