Corey Perry scored 50th to lead Anaheim Ducks over San Jose Sharks 6-2, Eliminate Calgary Flames
It was Calgary Flames’ last hope of making it to the playoffs if Anaheim lost its match, but got eliminated since Ducks sprawled to victory over San Jose Sharks by 6-2 on Wednesday night. Corey Perry once again led his team to success and entertained the
sold out crowd at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, as he scored his 50th of the season.
When you talk about players who have managed to guide their teams to greatness, then Perry would top that list. He recorded his third career hat-trick and secured Anaheim’s position in the playoffs.
Perry started off the match by scoring his 48th of the season, a little over midway through the first period. He then assisted rookie, Cam Fowler, for his 10th, nearly five minutes later, ending the first 20 minutes at 2-0.
Brad Winchester and Douglas Murray exchanged fists before Perry’s first goal and both were awarded a five minute major penalty.
Firing his second of the night, Perry was the one to again open the scoring in the second period. Bobby Ryan and Ryan Getzlaf earned assists on each of his goals. Sharks’ defenseman, Dan Boyle, potted his team’s first of the night, two minutes after Perry’s.
San Jose gave over 10 minutes of power-play time which had Ducks skirmishing all over the place.
Perry, Teemu Selanne and Jason Blake, all, added goals within a five-minute time frame and each during power-plays. Getzlaf earned his fourth assist on Selanne’s goal which slipped into the net after gliding off his skate.
Blake had it going easy for him when he went on a 2-on-0 breakaway with Saku Koivu and shot it past Sharks’ backup goalie, Antero Niittymaki.
Nittymaki was in for Antti Neimi, making only 28 saves off 34 attempts.
Both goalies for Anaheim, Ray Emery and Dan Ellis, had time on the ice. Emery made 22 rejections while Ellis made 14, both letting only one slip.
Ben Eager scored a second goal for Sharks during the final period, but it was not enough to give them the spark they needed.
Ducks face Los Angeles on Friday, giving them the opportunity to tie it with Nashville for fourth place. San Jose faces Phoenix the same day in its second last match of the season.
