My fiancee and I are thinking of going to Ireland for our honeymoon this coming September. We were recently on a cruise and met a fantastic couple whi live in Cork City but also have another house near the beach about 50 miles from their house. They invited us to go to their beach house for the honeymoon. So nice of them, I know. So, my question is we would be flying from Philadelphia, PA. Anyone know how long it would take to fly there and have you flown from the states to Ireland before? If so, what airline did you use and where did you fly in to? I am think we would fly straight to London and then onto Cork. What is the weather like that time of year? It would be mid-September. Thanks for your input.

  1. when i went to ireland i actually flew from philly to london then into shannon. with layovers it took i believe about 10hrs. (6hrs from philly to london then about an 1hr from london to shannon, i'm guessing it would be about the same amount of time to fly into cork). i flew british air and highly recommend it, big seats, leg room, very comfortable and if you get tickets early enough very reasonably priced. airline from london to cork: another one to consider (very cheap as well) is air lingus (ireland's official airline). weather: not entirely positive but i think still relatively warm, prepare for rain though and bring layers as at that time of year the temp will probably fluctuate. cork is a lovely city, you'll have a beautiful honeymoon there.

  2. British Airways can have a good deal for a ticket if u book now. From London u can go to Cork (its about 1.5 hour flight) by rayan air or easyjet ( I took a rayan air flight and paid 10 bucks for a ticket in may!). Other option is airlingus.

I spent a few days in Cork in may and september and i loved it. The whole western Ireland is really nice. Pubs, music, sea shore. The only problem is ... weather. September means that u get rain.

  3. September is often a perfect time to visit Ireland and Co. Cork is very special. The schools are back, so there are not so many native tourists around but the weather can be very good indeed and is often settled. Having said that, it may well be cool so bring fleeces or the like. And, of course, it might rain so bring waterproofs if you're out and about or buy an umbrella if you're in the city.

County Cork is superb and full of wonderful places. You might like to have a look at my self-drive tour, link is below.

I've flown from the US several times (I'm irish by the way) and have taken a variety of routes, including US-London and then a connection home. The Shannon option has been mentioned already; the most cost-effective option is a direct flight from Philly-London Stansted (they exist - I've checked), followed by a direct Stansted-Cork wth Ryanair:

Beware that Ryanair will not allow refunds if your US flight is late, so leave plenty of time for the connections. Your timeframe might be something like:

Dep Philly evening (there's a 2040 dep, arrive London 1055). Dep London 1750 and arrive Cork 1920. If you're on time it would allow you to get the Stansted express train into London and have a quick look around, or even get a train to nearby Cambridge and do a quick tour there (the only problem is I don't think there is left luggage in Stansted or any UK airport, so you would have to carry with you).

You'll have a great time no matter what you decide and give my love to Cork when you're there!
