Corn Combining?

I don't know much about corn farming, but would like to consider doing it. When farmers talk about "Combining corn", what are they talking about?

Also, is corn picked by hand, or done by tractor?

  1. when the farmers are talking about combining corn they are talking about using a specialized field harvesting tractor adapted with grain storage bins and augers to harvest corn.there are many different name brands  for combines like the famous name John Deere or like Case IH.

Here is a link to show you what a combine is and a couple more links to show you the heads on a combine.

the fuel for a combine is very expensive now because of the price of diesel.john deere combines are better than the rest because they give you extra comfort and they have a smaller fuel tank(runs for about the same time as any other combine.)

you can spend as much as $1,000 to fill up a combine with fuel.you would also have to spend about three hours to check all of the filters, hoses, and connectors so that way you don't break down in the middle of the field or something.

you also can take corn off by hand like the amish but that takes too long in a big field.

  2. Corn is harvested by a machine called a combine, it is called picking corn also. Corn is planted with a tractor and a corn planter and takes alot of fertilizer and moisture. Hope this helps you out.

  3. corn doesnt have to be combined, it can also be chopped and used right away or put in a silo       some people also bale it.  but if is combined it goes into a combine which seperates the kernels from the rest of the plant then the plant gets spit back out and the kernels are stored in a bin on the combine which will be emptied when it gets full

where i live, we just combine oats and sell the seeds the next spring,  but some of our neighbors combine corn

  4. If you are considering planting corn I would start with a small area. It does not sound like you are a farmer or have the equipment to complete this. I would plant a small area (maybe an acre) by hand and pick it by hand. One thing that you may want to look into is round up ready corn. They you will not have to worry about weeding.
