Question:

Corn Snake Advice please..?

I am sorta new at reptiles (i've had two anoles before), and am going to be getting a corn snake. I haven't had much experience with snakes before (besides holding the occasional one at exhibits). Before you ask, I have spent the past couple of days looking up information and calling the local pet stores (not you're usual nasty place..lol).

My question is: As of right now I have a 10 gal. tank. Will a corn snake be alright with that for a couple of days to a week? I'm looking into getting a younger one so I can get it used to handling..

Thanks in advance!!

  1. Yes that would be GREAT for te first year or two, but then you would have to switch it to a 30 gallon or maybe a little bitter for the rest of their life later on =] Which isn't to bad compare to how many times you would need to switch tanks for a red tail boa.....lol. But a 20 gallon is perfect too, maybe a little too small so a 30 would do a little better.

Well I would recommend the Critter Care bedding or the Dust Free Fiber Pure Cellulose Cat Litter because they are odor control and they soak up the water and waste your snake produce. Also aspen is good too, but I've never really use it because I'm currently using the Dust Free Fiber Pure Cellulose Cat Litter and it works miracles since it is odor control and it soaks up the mess my snakes makes.

That is wonderful that you have another 10 gallon for feeding =] Also remember to try feeding frozen/thawed....for many reasons.

Congrats on gettting the snake and hope you do well =] Just email me of you have any questions, I would be more then happy to help you out =]

  2. Yes, a 10 gallon tank will work for quite a while. A 20 gallon long is fine, I guess. I would keep an adult (4'+) in a 40 gallon. I think you will like a corn snake. I have 2 small corn snakes in a 55 gallon tank, and I really like them. I hope this helps.

  3. The 10 gallon will be PERFECTLY fine for a few weeks even. A 20 gallong tank is the perfect size for Corn Snakes, Young or Old. Good Luck and let me know if you have ANY questions!

  4. A 10 gallon tank will be fine if you're getting a young snake.  My 1 yo is in a 10 gallon and has plenty of room.  I started her in a 2 gallon I think it was since I got her at 1 month and upgraded her a few months ago.  If you're getting an adult (~3 yo+), that would be a tight fit and I'd wait until you had a 20 gallon long or a 30 gallon.  As far as substrate goes I had problems with mites every time I tried any wood-like substrates.  I don't think that's the norm since tons of people have wood substrates and no mites but I've been unlucky.  I've had mine on newspaper and have had no problems.  Easy to clean and cheap.  Not great to look at but I didn't want to chance getting mites again now that I'd have 4 snakes to de-mite.  I have them on unprinted newspaper that you can get at stores that sell packing stuff (boxes, bubble wrap etc.)

    Good luck with your snake!
