Corn Snake Food?

My 11 month old corn snake started diving for pinkies during his last feeding, which made me wonder, would things like fish and snakes be cool for food, and what else would be okay?

  1. I guess fish would be okay just be careful it doesn't have a disease or something. I wouldn't reccomend feeding it snakes just in case it doesn't digest properly. Also if you feed the snake frozen mice,( ones that were frozen then thawed) it's a lot safer because live ones might scratch the snake and hurt him really bad. Also bear in mind that most snakes are picky about dead food so it's just good to experiment.

  2. No, fish is NOT good for corn snakes.

Only rodents, like mice, and rats (for large adults) are okay for corns.

At 11 months old, your corn should be big enough to be eating mice larger then pinkies, unless he is just a slow grower. If you compare the size of the mouse to your snake, how big is it? Hold the mouse up to the widest part of your snake's body. If the mouse is smaller, then you should move up to the next size of mouse, which would be fuzzies. If the mouse is the same size (width wise) as the widest part of your snake, then it is a good size for him. If the mouse is much bigger (width wise) then the widest/thickest part of your corn snake's body, then it is too big.  I suggest using f/t (frozen/thawed) prey, because it's safer for the snake. Frozen thawed prey doesn't bite, or have parasites like live prey does. Almost all snakes will take f/t food, even if they had previously been eating live or fresh killed.

The only food acceptable for a corn is rodents of appropriate size. Mice are good. When your corn is adult, he may be able to eat rats, or occasionally chicks. Keep in mind that chicks should only be fed to snakes big enough to eat them, and that they should NOT be fed often. They cause runny, stinky poops.

NEVER feed a corn snake fish or insects. Stick to mice&rats.

  3. stick to pinkys. it really gives them what they need. you can try fish but, i really would not suggest that untill you talk to a vet abouth that. they can tell you exactlly why that would be a good or bad idea.
