Question:

Corn snake heating question

i am about to adopt a corn snake, and i have all the equipment needed, ( e.g. heat pad, uv light, 30 gallon tank, substrate, etc.) but, i live in a very old house w/ no central air. The room i'll be keeping him in gets to around 95 degrees or more during the summer. there is a window a/c unit, but to run that all day would be quite expensive. downstairs in the part i dont live in ( its a very large house ) is only a few degrees cooler. in the living area would be perfect, because we do keep an a/c running there, but i have two very rambuctios ( sorry 4 misspelling) who could get into the snake no matter where i kept it. winter is no problem because i have a gas fireplace that heats the whole house very well.

i really need help with this, and any and all suggestions are helpful.

thanks,

  1. buy a thermostat for the heatpad it means the heatpad will only come on when needed.

  2. your corn doesn't need a UV light.

95 degrees is not good for corns- way too hot, you'll have to keep the temps down a bit in the summer for him if you want him to thrive. if you get a tank with a sliding screen which latches and then locks, nothing will get in nor out, so long as it's stable and nothing can tip it over.

  3. 95 degrees is too hot for a corn snake, especially if the whole room is that temperature, which means the snake can't escape the heat. Most people are unaware that too much heat can cause health problems such as regurgitation just like temperatures that are too cool.

  4. If the tank gets up to 95 that could be a hazard. Uh, I'd take off the heat pad (You don't need a heat pad unless it's a snow, And even then you don't need a heat lamp) I'm going to assume it's a orange or red corn, so just keep a heat light on it. If you have natural sunlight, you can substitute it for that also. good luck!  Come ask me if you have any more questions. :)
