Question:

Corneal Ulcer Help???

So about five weeks ago I slept with my contacts in my eyes for one night and I woke up the next morning and my eye was swollen shut. The eye was red. For the next week it teared everytime I went outside and was fairly painful.

I was at camp, but I went to the eye doctor like two days after I got this ulcer and they gave me some drops and everything was expected to be fine.

I've been going back to the eye doctor once a week since then and it's finally getting better but is still there.

But the last time I went to the eye doctor it was really starting to heal but there was an abnormal adema (sp?) around it and the eye doctor was kinda worried about it.

And my vision has changed since I got the ulcers and the adema is like messing up the shape of the cornea or something? Not really sure about that part.

Now I have to go to a corneal specialist. Is that normal? Anything Ishould be doing? I'm really pretty worried about this. Hopefully an idea doctor will read this, haha.

  1. Without examining you it is really impossible to know for sure what is going on.  It appears, though, that your ulcer was located centrally in the visual axis.  ALL ulcers (not some but all) will result in a permanent scar to the cornea.  If your ulcer is centrally located then this scar may very well be interfering in your vision.  If the ulcer itself is no longer infected and your only problem is the edema, then you should be put on a regimen of topical steroids (I would use Pred Forte).  This steroid can minimize the density and severity of your corneal scarring.  It sounds like your doctor is not comfortable dealing with this type complication of ulcers so I would recommend you see the corneal specialist.  Hope all goes well.

EDIT:  In the earlier discussion I accidentally said "your only problem is NOT the edema".
