Cornel Loubser earns Women’s 50m backstroke title: Day three -
South African LC Nationals
Cornel Loubser of NFS-NF earned gold medal of the Women’s 50m backstroke in the Multi-Class category of S14-S15 on third day of the South African Long Course Nationals at the KZN Aquatic-Kings Park Centre in Durban on Wednesday, April 18.
The 17-year-old Loubser shattered hopes of her opponents who were eying the title of the event. With her relentless efforts, she outshined her challengers, as she remained prominent for gold medal of the discipline from the start of the race.
She cemented her place on the victory stand for gold medal by touching the wall with the timing of 35.65 seconds. Loubser was trailed by Yvonne Smith of Fsa-FS, who stayed nearly three seconds behind and posted a time of 38.53 seconds for silver medal.
The 21-year-old Smith was chased by Leanne Sterrenberg of WPA-WP, who occupied bronze medal of the discipline by posting a time of 41.39 seconds.
The fourth position of the discipline was secured by Christel Kriel of MP-MP, who was almost two seconds behind and clocked a timing of 43.31 seconds.
Similarly, Dot Smit of SWD-SW proved her eligibility for fifth position of the event as she ended her race with the timing of 44.67 seconds.
In the meantime, Shireen Sapiro of CGA-CG grabbed gold medal of the Women’s 50m backstroke in Multi-Class S1-S13 category.
The 21-year-old Sapiro overpowered her opponents with a gold winning effort of 33.99 seconds. She was followed by Tezna Abrahams of WPA-WP, who stayed nearly six seconds behind her and completed her swim in a time of 39.91 seconds for silver medal.
The 16-year-old Abrahams remained prominently ahead of Dimak Makgakga, who concluded her swim in third best place by producing a time of 45.44 seconds.
Makgakga was chased by Beth Nothling of KZNA-KZ, who secured fourth fastest spot of the event by producing a time of 53.22 seconds.
Furthermore, the championship will conclude on April 22 after the conclusion of all planned swimming events in Men and Women’s category.
In addition, the podium finishers were invited on the medal rostrum for their gruelling efforts at the prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
