Cornelius Bundrage knocks out Cory Spinks to defend IBF light middleweight title – Boxing News
Cornelius Bundrage, the current IBF light middleweight champion, defended his title for the second consecutive time against arch rival Cory Spinks, former IBF light middleweight champion. Cornelius knocked out Cory in the seventh round of the 12-round bout
held on June 30, 2012.
Bundrage and Spinks were colliding for the second time. The bout was personal for Spinks as it was Cornelius who grabbed the title from him.
With revenge on his mind, Spinks was entering his career’s 46th bout, boasting 39 wins. Since his last loss to Cornelius, the 34-year-old was on a two-bout win streak. The veteran pounder even before the bout had a bit disadvantage in his gear.
Also known as ‘Next Generation’, Cory has nailed just eleven opponents by knockout and does not have a powerful jab that can knock a tough chin out. Spinks strived hard to connect his powerful left hook and optimally use the southpaw stance but Cornelius
was the better man who emphatically nullified Cory’s each and every move.
Bundrage, 39, was in his 37th career bout with 31 wins and just four losses. Also known as ‘K9’, Cornelius had a bit upper hand for possessing a powerful jab and during the bout he proved that he was the man with the knockout power.
Cornelius has pinned 18 of his opponents by knockout and was coming off a stupendous win over Sechew Powell. From the very beginning of the bout, it was Cornelius who set the pace in an authoritative way.
Bundrage flattened Cory on the ring floor in the very first round and continuously pummelled the southpaw with sheer force and power. The tables turned when Cornelius started to lose gas and Cory started to dominate the bout.
Before the decisive seventh round, Cornelius was seriously exhausted. His corner men advised him to end things early as the duo was just at a point difference on the score cards. Cornelius moved in and after a flurry of jabs stunned Cory out at two minutes
and 32 seconds.
After the impressive win, Cornelius stated, “I was happy when I dropped him. I got a little excited and I wanted to drop him again and I didn’t follow the game plan. Even though he was taking control, I could see his punches. I slowed him down from all the
knockdowns. I knew it was a matter of time. I had to quit looping the punches and throw them straight. I had to start breathing, I had to start listening to my corner.”
With this win, Cornelius has proved that it was not his luck that helped him in his last clash with Cory. Bundrage now has 32 wins and 19 via knockout whereas Cory has received his seventh career loss.
