Are heatmats safe to use in homemade tanks wooden frame.

no- under tank heaters are for glass only! if you put an UTH on anything but glass, the warranty will be void.

a ceramic heat emitter or incandescent heat bulb- just make sure the fixture isn't close enough to burn the wood. also make sure the wattage is appropriate so the tank isn't under or over heated. try to provide a heat gradient with one side being warmer and the other cooler.

wrap the heat mat in tin foil . now its fire proof(lol. kinda) also you can now easily switch it around if need be( something you can never do if you adhere it to the bottom. a lamp would also do just as fine.
