  1. According to royalists, Charles II became king when his father Charles I was executed at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, the climax of the English Civil War. The English Parliament did not proclaim Charles II king at this time, passing a statute making it unlawful, and England entered the period known to history as the English Interregnum.

The Parliament of Scotland, on the other hand, proclaimed Charles II King of Scots on 5 February 1649 in Edinburgh. He was crowned King of Scots at Scone on 1 January 1651. Following his defeat at the Battle of Worcester on 3 September 1651, Charles fled to the continent and spent the next nine years in exile in France, the United Provinces and the Spanish Netherlands.

The English Parliament resolved to proclaim Charles king and invite him to return, which message reached Charles at Breda on 8 May 1660. In Ireland, a convention had been called earlier in the year, and on 14 May it declared for Charles as King. Charles set out for England, arriving in Dover on 25 May 1660 and reaching London on 29 May (which is considered the date of the Restoration, and was Charles's thirtieth birthday).

  2. Try this! It details some of the events of the coronation. http://www.londononline.co.uk/monarchy/C...

There are links to three other pages as well, the first page I linked you to is the introduction. Hope it helps.

It's a little complicated with Charles II because he was King of Scotland first, 1649 - 1651, and then King of England, of Scotland and of Ireland 1660 - 1685, his reign in England and Ireland being *delayed* by the Interregnum whereas it was interrupted in Scotland by the Protectorate.
