Question:

Corporal Punishment in High School?

In the states that Corporal punishment is still legal in high schools, what methods of punishment do they use on students to break rules?

I also don't understand how they can actually cause pain to a high school student, because wouldn't the student be more likely to retaliate on the teacher or not let the teacher touch them? They are high school students, not little children.

Please shed some light on this? thanks

  2. i didn't even know that some states allowed that! i go to high school and if any of the teachers tried that on us they would be the ones in pain.

  3. Usually bent over a desk for 3 swats with a paddle.

Just because the State doesnt allow it doesnt mean the school doesnt do it.

The laws also do not apply to private schools.

I have heard of some colleges that do use corporal punishment. Not sure if thats true.

Almost all of the states that allow paddling have the poorest test scores and highest drop out rates in the country.

Studies have shown that a paddling can be good for memory.

VeggieChick: Whats really sad is that your parents dont touch you.

  4. The blanket consequence for refusing to be paddled is expulsion.  The idea is that education is a privilege which can be lost for refusing discipline.

Most schools which paddle will offer a less drastic alternative.  For example, instead of a paddling a student may opt for suspension.  A suspension means failing grades.  Those students with ideation of attending a top college will generally opt to be paddled to protect their academic record; consequently, I accepted a paddling when I was in 11th grade.

  5. Teacher's can't touch a kid. Ever. In any state. Even thinking about it is illegal.

The "punishment" when you do something bad in school is they "make" you stay home for 2-3 days and have a mini vacation. Ouch. That will teach the kids. I guess I can't see how suspending a kid for a few days is punishment. Don't kids who act out prefer to be home alone all day watching tv?

  6. I went to a high school that used corporal punishment. It was a private school though, not public. Any student could be sent to the principals office for a paddling. The principal had a wooden paddle that she would spank students with. The number of swats varied, and as far as I know no one ever received more than 10.

I never heard of any student retaliating, and as far as pain, I was on the receiving end of the paddle twice, and yes, it hurt.

  7. I go th High School in Texas. Even in middle school they can give swats. As an example: If you are not wearing a belt (part of the uniform in public schools) then they can give you  "spankings" with a plastic or wooden paddle with hole in it. The only rule is that it cannot leave a mark that last longer then a day...red marks are ok, but bruises are not....and there has to be a witness...one male, one femail.

It sucks, but thats how it is. A parent can complain and a child can refuse until the parent has been contacted, however, it does happen all the time.

  8. There are 23 (maybe 22 now) states where corporal punishment is still legal.    At one time all the states allowed it.    In the last few decades, an increasing number of states have been making it illegal.    Contrary to what some may believe it's becoming LESS common to use this as a form of discipline.    Even in states where it's still legal,  there are many individual school districts that have a ban on it.    In states or in school districts that still allow it,  parents can fill out a form in the beginning of the school year that basically says that they don't want corporal punishment to be used on their kid.

If a kid becomes violent then he'll be arrested for assault .   High school boys are as strong as a lot of men so it can be risky to the one doing the paddling to try this on an older kid.        Someone else already said that the kid can take an alternative punishment.   That would be the only logical explanation of why the "paddler" wouldn't be getting attacked themselves.

I was reading up on this last night and states like Texas, Alabama and Mississippi regularly paddle kids.   In other states like Pennsylvania, Colorado and Arizona is rarely done even though it's still legal.     You can read about this on http://www.stophitting.com.    There were a lot of good statistics on that website.   I couldn't find much on older kids retaliating but I heard enough stories (in real life) of teenagers becoming violent when hit by an adult.

You asked a good question though.   I was wondering the same thing.

  9. Corporal punishment is still legal in Arkansas, as of the 07-08 school year, at all levels in the public schools -- including high school.  It is publicized (newspapers, letters home, district publications, etc.) that this will be the method of punishment and it is a parent's responsibility to 'opt out' if they do not want their student/child physically punished at school.  If a parent chooses to 'opt out' on behalf of the child, the school will resort to suspension.  The child will be required to make up the day(s) missed and the parent(s) will be required to pay a fee/fine for the extra (summer) days that the child attends school.  The fee is used to pay for the teacher, administrator, and utilities at the school for non-regular school days.  There is a flat fee per day that (for the most recent year -- Summer '08) was $28.50 per student / per day.

My cousin and his wife have 3 children in public schools in Arkansas.  They have ALWAYS opted their children out of corporal punishment.  None of the children has ever been suspended for even a single day.

  10. are you f*ckin kidding me? i never got touched at home and i sure as h**l wont get touched at school!

    punishements for hs are:

    detention

    picking trash

    suspension

    expulsion

in my school they do this thing where you have to help the cleaning people for the whole day (kinda like suspension i guess)

  11. Now in North America teachers get in trouble if they hit a kid, even if the kid was asking for it. And do you know what? The kids dont pay attention in class, they assault and tell teachers to **** off, and they are growing up to be little shitheads.

The retarded thing is that the kids keep pushing the limits, not getting punished for misbehaving, and then they take it too far and the cops are called and the kids get tazed and thrown in juvie. By then the kid doesnt know HOW to follow the rules, and is basically broken for life.

Kids NEED a good ******* beating when they do something bad, otherwise they grow up thinking they dont have to follow the rules, and they get locked up in prison and raped.

I bet within 30 years corporal punishment will be allowed in schools again.
