Corrado Cecchinelli explains new ‘Claiming Rules Teams’ regulations - MotoGP Update
The new 2012 regulations have brought a line of teams which can get into the MotoGP class with relative ease, after having a numbers of relaxations to run in the season. The new CRTs were explained by the series director, Corrado Cecchinelli.
The 2012 season will also see the big displacement engines with a 1000cc capacity limit and also, the CRT basis, which will allow any team which is not a member of Motorcycle Sports Manufacturer’s Association (MSMA) to enter the premier class level. The
association was formed by Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Ducati.
Corrado Cecchinelli commented on the details of the Claiming Rules teams and said, “I think it will add to the competition in the sense that we will hopefully have more bikes on the grid. I don’t think any CRT team (which basically means the present privateer
teams), will lose any chance or potential compared to what there is now.”
The teams have recently applied through the CRT application process and completed the first level of the procedure. The move will help the diminishing grid of MotoGP, to retain its’ size in next season’s campaign, as new teams considered for the next round
of the application process propose about 21 riders.
A successful addition of riders will significantly increase the size of the 2012 MotoGP grid. Since 2007, the premier class race has seen regular manufacturer teams competing in the event, which will be totally different in next season. The Moto2 grid presently
hosts 38 riders as seen in the last event at Estoril, which is double the number of the present MotoGP grid. The teams are expected to withdraw some of their riders from Moto2 class.
The Claiming Rules Team’s entries are subject to different rules, when compared to the present MotoGP teams which entered the class with the Motorcycle Sports Manufacturer’s Association (MSMA) membership.
The prominent regulation relaxations are more numbers of engines, as MSMA teams are allowed with six engines for a complete season, whereas, CRTs will have 12 engines. Another relaxation is provided in fuel capacity, with 24 litres for CRTs and 21 litres,
for MSMA teams.
The 2012 regulations will also allow a MSMA team to purchase an engine from CRT after the race event for a fixed amount of 20,000 Euros, which includes the engine, gear and transmission. For purchasing the engine only, the amount allowed is 15,000 Euros.
Cecchinelli, continued, “These are big aids, and they will allow the independent teams to race with much lower budgets.”
FIM has announced that 16 teams have submitted their application to participate in the 2012 MotoGP campaign. The governing body of the premier class motorcycle racing, IRTA, revealed the data of the applications during the third round of the MotoGP event
at Portugal.
