  1. wear wraps, make sure ur wrist is straight

  2. Hang it lower for a few weeks or months until your hands get stronger -- the higher you hit the bag, the softer it will be.

Make sure you learn how to wrap your hands.  Learn the theory behind it, not just how to do it, so you understand the dangers inherent in punching and how to avoid them.

Wear padded gloves over your handwraps if you have bruised knuckles.

If the pain is in a part of your hand other than the striking surface, your technique may be incorrect.  Or, you may just need some time to adjust to the new activity.

Be especially careful of hook punches.  You can really hurt your wrist or other parts of your hand if you throw a hook improperly.

I suppose it goes without saying, but you should avoid punching full power unless and until you are able to do so without excessive damage to your hand.  Hitting the bag full power doesn't make you tough, it just gives you repetitive stress injury and makes you feel stupid afterwards.  When you are wearing the proper protective gear, and when you have learned and practiced proper technique, and when your hands, wrists, and arms are properly conditioned to the workload, then you will be able to wreck the punching bag.
