Question:

Correct settings for sewing fake fur?

I've been trying to sew fake fur (to other pieces of fake fur), but I noticed that the stitches have all been irregular..I've tried different settings and needles, but it seems I haven't found the correct combination.

What are the right settings/right needle to use? The fur I'm using is pretty light weight, and it has a bit of stretch to it. Some are a little heavier with less stretch, but the results are always the same (the heavier one turns out a bit better, but still irregular).

I'm currently using a 14/90 sharp, stitch length 2, with various tensions..none of them have resulted in perfect stitches.

Any suggestions? I don't think it's the machine, since the stitches are fine for other materials.

I do have a manual for the machine, but it doesn't say anything about fur.

thanks!

  1. My suggestion would be to use a smaller needle for stretch knits (9 or 11).  I don't know what a "2" stitch length is on your machine, but I would use a little bit longer length and see what that does.

  2. Try putting tissue paper on the fabric, on the bottom where the feed dogs are and on the top piece of fabric.  This helps thing glide through a bit better.  I have been doing this with shearling and it helps a lot.

  3. You might want to adjust the pressure foot k**b or button on the top of your machine for the thickness of your material.  It will let your material flow smoother under the needle and the stitches should even out.

    Hope this helps you some.

  4. Use a ballpoint needle if the backing is a knit which it usually is and once you finish the seam, use the head of a pin on the right side of the fabric to pull the "hairs" out of the seam.
