Correction....question about Racism?

I am married to a mixed person (black/white). I am white. We are going to have children and I think it's very important for me to understand what people encounter in their day to day lives. Please be serious and honest w/ me about any time you feel you have been treated unfairly or rudely b/c of your race. Being a white woman, I do not see this as commonly as others might. Just being honest. My husband (thankfully) has not encountered it himself. Sometimes I wonder if people look for it or are ultra-sensitive....if so, I can understand that. Being nervous and senses are heightened. HOWEVER...I am not naive, I know there are racist individuals out there. Please educate me about what you've experienced and what I should expect to experience with a bi-racial child. Thank you SO MUCH in advance.

  1. By seeing this first hand if your child do something "wrong" people mite say  thats the black side of him/her or if they do something "good" they would say thats the white side and the child mite even go through the kids thinking that they are rich because of their mom and dad race. I would just support the child and make sure he/she knows not to listen to the rude comments because its not true

  2. I am a bi-racial child (black/white/mexican/indian) and no one has made fun of me.......yet. While my african-american mom and my caucasian/mexican dad were together other people ( for example blacks and whites) made fun of them and even tried to jump them. But love prevailed, and that is why I was created :) I predict as the years pass there will be even MORE bi-racial children

  3. I live next door to a racially mixed family...they are the most mannerly kids and good neighbors.  I don't care about color, it's actions that count!

  4. I am not bi racial but i was adopted by jewish white Americans.  I am honduran and have a very dark complexion.   You would think being Jewish and hispanic that i would have encountered some sort of discrimination.  Sometimes I have heard, wow your jewish thats awesome or your hispanic and smart.  But it is all how take it.  I could say thats was a racist remark or i could look at and be, well that may be ignorant, but it was well intended.    Now i won't be stupid and say that i may encounter it, i don't make my race apparent or bring up comments about.  I at my university, i am usually one or two "colored" students in my class.  I could say, wow i am the only colored person here, but i actually have never thought of it.  I hear more ignorant c**p for being jewish than being Hispanic.  Just because some one say ignorant remarks does not mean they are racists.  Its important to analyze the remarks before you jump to conclusions.

My advice is that you do not encourage  your child too be one race or the other.  Do not encourage him to hang out with one race over the other.  Most peol

  5. I know half and half mixed people often feel like they belong to a separate race.  Neither one side or the other truly accepts them.

Also white culture accepts minorities more if they act more as a member of white society.

  6. People love bi-racial children, who are half-white and black.  They are sympathetic towards them and usually treat them nicer then usual.  They understand that it is not their fault as innocent children, and usually complement them on the characteristic beauty that the certain type of mix brings.  I do not think they will have a problem with bad treatment with others. But I do think they will have problems with personal identity issues.

It can be very confusing for a child, as they start to realize the racial atmosphere that unfortunately continues to plague human society today.  This usually is not devestating enough for the child to have an issue which will stunt his/her development, and at times with the right mentors and nurturing from parents, allows the child to become more bi-racially concious, giving them an edge on social issues such as race and how it affects public relations.  I think its a beautiful idea and I would not be worried too much.

The world is becoming more and more tolerant when it comes to these issues.  And at times it serves as an advantage for the kid when seeking professional positions in the real world, with a mult-cultured edge that adds dynamics.

Also watch out for a few things.  These type of situations requires a little more strategic approach and extra nurturing as the child is growng up.  If you do it the right way, you might have a kid thats the next Obama, or even better ;-).

Most of the problems is usually faced witht the parents.  Lots of people are racist towards the parents unfortunately, people are for some reason threatened by things that are different. Humans have a long way to go, but they will get their. You can take my word for it.  Love each other, live happily , and Learn :-)

    Good luck with Everything,

    Ray
