Corrie Sanders murdered during birthday party – Boxing News
Former world heavyweight champion Corrie Sanders was murdered by three thugs during his brother’s son’s 21st birthday party at a local restaurant. According to the police report, the former champion died of wounds by two gunshots, one on the back
and one in the stomach area.
“Michael's (the brother of the victim) son was turning 21, and Corrie was also there when they (the robbers) came,” said John Bejager to the Sapa news agency.
Corrie Sanders was a South African former heavyweight champion. He was 46 and was shot at a restaurant where the birthday party was held. He died on Sunday morning due to the sustained injuries.
“I think he died a hero,” asserted Sander’s ex wife Sunette Sanders to radio station 702.
“He was just protecting his girl because they were shooting. He was hit by the two bullets, one in the arm and the other one through part of the stomach,” she added.
Sanders was one of the best fighters during his time. He held a tremendous record of 42 wins at the time of retirement in 2008 with just four losses. His most famous victory was over the current WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. He knocked out
Dr. Steelhammer in the second round in 2003, which was a major achievement as no one has ever humiliated Wladimir this well.
“Just woke up to news of Corrie Sanders having been murdered last night, what another senseless waste of life in SA. RIP Champion,” tweeted John Smit, South Africa’s 2007 World Cup winning rugby champion.
“Corrie Sanders murdered but don't worry, crime stats are down. Thank U Mr President for such a safe safe country,” he added.
The news has spread like wildfire and the nation is mourning over the loss of a former champion. Sanders was a tremendous fighter with an excellent record. He retired when it was the right time and cemented his legacy in the industry.
As of now, there is no news regarding who the thugs were but they definitely caused loss that cannot be reversed. Police is investigating the matter and has promised to catch the criminals soon.
