Ok so he is Puerto Rican, however he was born New York and he clearly clases himself as partly American, why else whould he be so bias? He clearly allowed Hopkins to use the same hit and hold tecnique threw most of the fight also Hopkins head pushing certainly needed points deducted. Look at the Hatton fight?? Cortez has a great reputation, dont get me wrong however top boxing at the moment is literly Britain VS America - yet Cortez's ref'in is so 1 sided its sickening he gets away with it. Should he be aloud to ref a UK US fight, because surely everyone wants their OWN country to win?

  1. yes

  2. Cortez is a fair ref, everyone knows the UK hates America, so bringing a UK ref here to ref is pretty much saying we want the American to lose. How is Cortez one sided ur just so dumb u don't even realize.

  3. This is not a serious question, this is not British soccer where you can blame the ref for everything, Mayweather out boxed Hatton in every way possible while hatton tried to brawl and wrestle and fight dirty (he even said it himself), and moreover Cortez didn't knock out  Hatton twice, Mayweather did....as far as the calzaghe vs hopkins fight it was very well conducted and while there were some dirt hits here and thenre everything was taken into consideration, start blaming the fighters and not the referees, otherwise no one here will take you seriously.

  4. In the 11th round hopkins took a knee from a body punch. Cortez told him to get up because the punch was clean. The correct way to handle that was to start counting because it was a knock-down.....the problem is, in america if you dont give the calls, or the breaks to black athletes your career is over...sad but true.

  5. Mickey Vann- Is it fair that an English referee should ref a UK vs. Australia boxing event (Hatton vs. Tszyu)?

Don't take this the wrong way, but your logic is flawed and your bias is obvious- if you really felt that way, then you would be asking the above question along with the one you asked.  Hatton got murked by Mayweather and it had nothing to do with "Cortez not letting Ricky fight his fight" as many people have claimed.  Cortez did EXACTLY what you're supposed to do as the referee- he separated them whenever they fell into a clinch.  Mayweather was simply the better fighter and there was nothing Hatton could do about it.  Hatton said nothing about Cortez when he fought Jose Luis Castillo- you know why?  Because he won!  Hatton did what most fighters do after they lose; he made an excuse, and I don't blame him after the way Floyd knocked him out.  As far as the reffing in the Hopkins-Calzaghe fight- I don't see why you're complaining with this one; I mean Calzaghe won!  And regardless, Cortez again did an excellent job with this fight because, I don't care who you are, but anyone is going to have a tough time reffing a Hopkins fight- he's just that type of fighter.  I could understand your reasoning if Cortez deducted a point from Calzaghe or if he gave Hopkins even more time after he faked it for the second time, but he did NEITHER, and he acted like the true professional that he is.  If a fighter doesn't perform up to par (which Calzaghe did not), then we shouldn't go blaming the referee by saying that he wanted someone from his own country to win- Calzaghe won the fight fair and square and Hopkins did not get any help from the ref.  I think that this fight showed why Calzaghe has not left his comfort zone of Europe until now, because it was obvious to everyone who saw the fight, that if he crossed the pond years ago and fought Hopkins in his prime, B-Hop would have beaten him easily.

  6. If you believe what you say, then your Mickey Van should never ref a Hatton fight.  What he allowed Hatton to do against Tszyu was practically a war crime.  Get over the referee blaming.  Mayweather starched Hatton.

I'm very tired of all the crybabying over the referee, it wouldn't be so bad if it were intellectually honest.

  7. I thought cortez did good for the fight on saturday because he didn't minus any points from calzaghe when he hardly hit hopkins in the cup and hopkins claimed it was so bad that he had to take a 5 minute rest.

  8. your view on people wanting their country to win, don't hold water in present day America. we have been infected by so many traitors who want us to loose at everything, and jump for joy when it happens. i couldn't care less who the ref. is, he can only influence a fight to a certain degree.
