Cory Schneider ready to move into No. 1 role for Vancouver Canucks next season -NHL Update
Cory Schneider is pumped up and ready to take a jab and shine in the spotlight as the 26-year-old is getting an opportunity of a lifetime which not many goalies are bestowed upon them, especially when there is someone like Roberto Luongo leading the position.
For the Vancouver Canucks, Roberto Luongo was to be their number one goalie well past the 2020 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season with his huge contract, but recent years have proved him not to be in the mix for what Vancouver as a club is aiming for.
Signing a three-year, $12 million contract, Schneider is finally getting into the position that he had been hoping to play for a long time as Luongo, who has 10 years remaining on his contract, is looking for a trade.
"Every chance I got to play in the past, I handled it as a No. 1," Schneider said after his new contract signing. "Every game in the NHL is pressure. Just being in the NHL is pressure. I don’t think the contract or the dollars or your role on the team adds more pressure."
Despite getting Vancouver Canucks to two straight Presidents’ Trophy for the past 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 regular seasons, the team is not content with Roberto Luongo’s performance in the ever so intense playoffs. He got into the Stanley Cup Finals in 2011 but choked against Boston Bruins and Tim Thomas.
Now, as surprising as it may sound, Vancouver is on the verge of trading their veteran goalie and are currently in the process of talking with a number of teams around the league but cannot hint at anything certain as of yet.
"We're listening," Gillis said. "We have been listening to teams that are interested in acquiring him. If we get what we think the value is there we'll trade him. I don't have a timetable. In fact, in hockey things can change in five minutes with one phone call. It's unrealistic to put a timetable on it."
Schneider really shined during this year’s playoffs as Vancouver Canucks gave him the last three games against Los Angeles Kings with 1.31 goals-against average and a .960 save percentage. Hopefully, the youngster will be able to continue playing that way.
