for this year's sakura con in seattle i'm going as katara from avatar the last airbender, in her new fire nation outfit. but i am so stumped on how to make her gold wrist guards or bands( whatever you call them) that go from her wrist to her elbow. does anyone have any ideas or previous experience? i thought maybe paper mache, but i don't it would be strong enough or good looking.

  1. There's something called Gapoxio (Epoxy Putty) that a lot of people use. After making it, you can always paint over it to get that golden look. (Brilliant Metallic spray paint is pretty darn good.) Try to stay away from fiberglass though, it's highly toxic and I wouldn't take the risk unless highly necessary.

[edit] I forgot to mention that Gapoxio is an epoxy resin so that fumes are also toxic (and can cause cancer). But of course with any craft project like that, you should be using safety gear. I've got these great goggles that I invested in just in case I have to do some kind of drilling for anything around the house along with a box of a few dust masks. Better safe then sorry~

  2. I would get gold spandex so you can pull them on easily. Make a tube with a quarter inch hem at the top and bottom, and you can draw the lines on with fabric paints.

Or if you want a more realistic look, get some gold satin and quilt it with a thin piece of felt in between, then make your tubes. It won't be stretchy but it will look real.
