If I stay and eat at average places, I don't need anything fancy but want a decent experience. And travel to 3 or 4 cities.

  1. Air fare varies time to time and averages 1100 Canadian dollars. If you stay at hostels or B/B stops you will do OK and the food is good in all the local Cafes too. Not too expensive if you buy your own food at stores and eat lots of bread and cold meats that are good as well, and the wine is cheap there too...great to backpack over there. The usual tourist traps are there as in in any country.

  2. I'm currently planning a 9 night trip to Italy and hitting up Rome, Florence, and Venice.  I bought an airinclusive/hotel/rail package online from a major air carrier for about 900 bucks per person.  You should check out a tour book as there are so many things to see that are low cost/free.  And don't forget one of the best parts:  getting lost is the best way to experience a location as you discover it while trying to find your way.  The best part of these cities is that the city is walkable as the points of interest are located close together, which means that the best transportation is also free--walking!

Despite the fact that Europe is more expensive than the US, I do not think that food would be that much more expensive...we plan on having the continental breakfast free at the hotel then eating as the locals eat, which can't be as big as a rip off as the restaurants strategically located near the big tourist attractions.  I figure probably a hundred bucks a day for the two of us to eat lunch/dinner/drinks, so that would be another 1000 on top of the 1800 for flight/hotel/rail.

Hope you have a wonderful vacation!
