Question:

Cost of Moving from Los Angeles to the Bay Area?

We are moving from LA to Oakland soon and we're trying to decide between hiring and driving our own truck or having movers come to pack the truck and drive it for us. Obviously the second option is more expensive, but my new job is giving me some money (not much--about $1,500) towards moving costs. So, here's my question: does anyone know an average cost for hiring movers to load and drive (not pack) from LA to SF for an average 1-bedroom apartment? We don't have an enormous couch or TV or anything like that--most of our stuff comprises boxes of books, kitchen ware, and clothes. I don't want to go to the hassle of getting some moving evaluators out to our apartment to assess the cost if it's **way** out of our price range. I just want a general figure. Is this going to cost us $5000? Any ideas?

  1. Move yourself and save the money for new furniture, etc.

  2. To save money...I would do it yourself. Here's why:

1.You only have a one bedroom apt.

2.It's fun to drive the truck there, make it an "adventure in moving" (as You-Haul says)

3.Keep the money and buy a nice TV or something for your new place.

4.You'll get a good workout doing it yourself.

  3. I did it last year, it didn't cost me remotely 1500 but then again, I don't have that much stuff. I moved into a one bedroom, I did it with a large van. Definitely just rent a truck yourself and do it all yourself, if you're just moving into a one bedroom, it should be a lot less than a 1000.Your biggest expenses are the truck and gas, if you do all the work yourself. It should be somewhat easy.
