Question:

Cost of a feline cystotomy (removing stones from the bladder)?

I just found out today that my male cat is going to need surgery to remove large mineral deposits from his bladder. Has anyone had to do this? If so, what was the cost? The vet told us he'd call in the morning to give us a more accurate estimate...I'm kind of just wondering what I'm in for. Thanks for any advice :)

  1. It's hard to say, as most vets charge by the hour and difficulty of the surgery, if you are going to want pre-surgical bloodwork done, and what kind of anethisea you are going to have used (gas is more expensive). Removing stones is usually fairly easy, but can get difficult when there are many small stones.

But if you get the minumum of things done, I would say it would be about $200.

  2. It can vary wildly from area to area.  After your vet calls, contact a few others and get a few opinions, and to see if they quote you a similar costs.

I hope your poor cat feels better!

  3. idk it may be different in some places if you don't have the money i think you can get the surgery first then pay laterhope he gets better

  4. I have seen this surgery when I volunteered at my vet years ago, but I do not know the cost.  Luckily, I have not had this surgery with one of my own cats.  Prices will range by locations, though.

Do you know there is a credit card just for medical expenses, including veterinary, called Care Credit?  My Care Credit has saved me several times now for surprises like this.  The link is below, you can see if your vet office accepts this card (or ask tomorrow when you talk with them) and apply online.  If I am not too badly mistaken, the first 3 months are interest free, so that helps.

Hope the surgery is uneventful and kitty is back to his old self soon.

    Purrs to you and kitty.
