Cost of adoption with someone you know?

I have a friend who is pregnant and she is desperately looking for somebody to adopt her baby. I would love to adopt it from her but I dont know how much it costs or how to go about it. I know adoption costs about 10,000 to 30,000 with an adoption agency but I dont need one right? Is it still thousands of dollars to adopt a baby even without one? Also how do you go about the adoption process. I know somebody out there must know about this. Grandparents who have adopted their children's baby and such. Please help.

if the mother is willing to do this outside an agency, it should just cost the amount a lawyer charges to handle the paperwork.  i'm guessing that wouldn't be anywhere near $10,000.  of course, there might be laws in your state that may make the process more complicated therefore costing more. you might want to contact an adoption lawyer and find out for sure.  most lawyers will provide you a consultation for free.

Why is she looking for someone else to parent? Wouldent it be more ethical (and kinder) of you to just support her in bringing the child up without taking her parental rights away and splitting a family up.?

If possible children should always be kept with their mothers, taking them away from them damages them emotionaly

You should contact an attorney and have him/her draw up the paperwork.  He/she will also take you step by step through the process including the court/finalization process.

There are many ways to adopt a child.  If you were to adopt the way you are describing the cost would be virtually nothing.  Your up front costs would be:

1.  Attorney and court costs (maybe about 2000-3000)

2.  Birthmom costs (ie. medical, living expenses)

3.  Baby medical...if you want her to get various tests/procedures that insurance won't cover...you pay.

4.  Her attorney costs (not sure how much that would be)

5.  HOme Study and post placement visits about 2700

I would guess that it would be between 4000-10000

Now on the flipside...Pres. Bush passed a law in 2005 that adoptive families are allowed a tax credit of 10000 (and some change).  Meaning for a period of 5 years you do not owe the government up to 10000 for adoption approved expenses.  So if you think about it your adoption could cost you nothing.  Good luck....

The cost should not be even close to that when going through a private adoption. You still need to go through a adoption agency to get a home study done and completed. In order to adopt in the U.S. you have to have a completed home study BUT in most states you DO NOT need a completed home study to take custody of the child. You will need to call a attorney to have them draw up the paper work for the custody of the baby and having the parents rights removed. You may want to check and call around and see if you have a county attorney or some one close to that standing who may and will be able to do some of the paper work for little to on cost for you.

My husband and I adopted both of our boys through private adoption our fist son came home in 2000 and the adoption finalized in 2001 and in 2001 our other son came home and in 2002 his adoption was finalized. We had a adoption agency do the home study and file any and all paper work that  needed to be filed with the court, we had the county attorney do the custody paper work (giving us custody of the children) and the forms to have the parents sign away  their rights. We did end up needing to go to the adoption attorney to have the putative father registry done for both boys.

Our adoption cost for EVERY THING  and for both adoption together only cost a little over $3000 yes only $3000 BUT that was 5 years ago. either way if you do most of the foot work your self and try to find out who can do the paper work with out spending alot of money you will save alot of money.

back years ago they could go to place where they have kids homes an adopt there not sure if you can do it that way or not. maybe you just get lawyer to do papers foryou but make sure its legal.

Contact an attorney (www.adoptionattorneys.org) and they can tell you what it will cost.  They don't generally charge for the initial consultation, so you can shop around for one that you are comfortable with.  HOWEVER, you should make sure that they are experienced with adoption.
