  1. 5p in Venezuela

  2. $2.95 USD per US Gallon

  3. In Wisconsin $3.07 / gal.  Wonderful Wisconsin taxes!

  4. The cost of gasoline in New Hampshire is $2.87 per gallon.  Too high for us, but it is relevant as to where you live, what you are used to.

  5. The variance in gasoline prices in different countries USUALLY has to do with governmental policies that either tax or subsidize the price of gas in a certain country or region.. to promote governmental policies.

Typically in the US gasoline taxes while not miniscule are not excessively high (I think it usually varies between 10 and 25 %)  Gasoline taxes are used to pay for road construction & maintenance, environmental costs, etc.

In Canada gasoline is slightly higher than in the US again because Canadian taxes are higher than US taxes.

In Europe gasoline has always been high priced compaired to US (I do not know what it is now but in the 1990s when I lived there gas was $1 a gallon in the US and $4+ a gallon in Europe, e.g. taxes of 250+%) because of high taxes.  This allowed mass transit to take hold (and subsidizes mass transit).  More mass transit lessens the need for a personal automobile.  The high price also made personal automobiles smaller for the average family, etc.  If I remember correctly automobiles were also kept remarkably expensive (Then a car in the US cost 1/2 or less than in Europe or other areas around the world)

However, in some countries like Iran gasoline is much less (I think I read recently $0.25 a gallon or so and people were rioting when they wanted to increase this to $0.75 or so a gallon) because of government subsidies.  I read recently that the Iranian government is going broke because the cost of these subsidies. It seems that while they produce lots of crude oil..  they have to import gasoline because of a lack of refining capacity..

Remember one of the basic laws of economics: higher prices lessens demand and lower prices do nothing to dampen demand..

This has been a factor in China where I think there is a slight subsidy or very low gasoline taxes so that the demand for gas in China has been growing.
