Question:

Cost of household bills in New Zealand?

Hi,

I am looking to rent an apartment in Auckland.

Can anyone advise roughly on how much it would cost me in bills per week? Eg gas, electric, water, broadband, etc? Are there any other charges I might not be aware of?

Many thanks, Neil

  1. hi there,

first of all you should have listed this in the new zealand category, but that's yahoo answers category selecting for you!!

Broadband internet, depends on how many gigs you want, we have a 15G per month plan thats $60 a month, they offer phone and internet packages from about $79.95 a month

    http://www.orcon.net.nz/orconathome/

we have our phone through telecom and that's $39 a month

Telecom also offers broadband connection packages

    and http://www.telecom.co.nz/hub/0,10172,200...

    for their phone pricing plans

Telstra clear is the other phone and internet provider see

but basically about $100 a month for phone and internet.

Electric, well i just live in a 2 bedroom flat, bills over winter for 2 people, baths or showers each night, heat pump used for 4-8 hours a day, computer frequently used, TV, DVD player, gaming machines used fairly frequently, energy efficient light bulbs, bills come to roughly $100-$140 a month. In summer it would only be about $70-$90 a month

    and

Gas... well most places have electric heating, cooking elements and hot water so not sure, but to fill a 9kg LPG cylinder it'd cost about $30

Water its free!!!!!! and hot water is included in your power bill, it tends to be the largest contributer to peoples power bills (roughly 40%) but take short showers if it worries you.

only other bill to consider would be if you wanted to get cable tv, its $49.50 a month for a basic start up package which includes an extra 20 channels on top of the free 3-6 channels that we get without it. you can add sport and movie packages to it for extra $$$ aswell

    see http://skytv.co.nz/prices-and-packages.a...

    hope this is all helpful!
