Question:

Cost of living in Australia?

I'm planning a gap year in Australia and was wondering how the cost of living compares with UK.

I'm talking food and accommodation more than goods/ services.

Obviously I'll be working but I need to make sure I take enough funds to get set up.

Thanks.

  1. Your accommodation cost could vary a lot depending on where you stay, and what type of accommodation you get.  Shared accommodation in Sydney may be about $150 pw, other areas maybe $100pw.

Food,  again this varies on shops.  2 litres milk is about $2.20 in Woolworths. Bread is between $1.10 and $4 loaf depending where you buy it.  ALDI sell a decent loaf for $1.10 but Woolworths same price version is not to my taste !

Meat: Some Butchers prices in May 2008 in Near Brisbane, SE QLD.

    Lamb Loin Chops $9.99 kg

    Legs of Lamb $5.99 kg

Topside Roast (MSA Beef) $7.99 kg

    Whole Rib Fillets $15.99 kg

Budget Whole Rib Fillets $9.99 kg

    BBQ Sausages $1.99 kg

    Whole Rumps (Grainfed) $5.99 kg

Pork Chops 5 kg for $20

    Premium Mince 5 kg $25

In a normal supermarket that would probably cost twice as much !

We spend about $150 pw on food for a family of 3, but not sure what a single person would spend.

  2. See http://www.aussiemove.com/aus/costlive.a...

It's a website made by a family from the UK that moved to Australia - very well laid out on explaining the costs on living in Australia.
