Roughly how much would a beginner's longboard cost. Both second-hand and brand new prices. I'm not looking for any specific numbers just a rough estimate would be great. Thanks!

  1. Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on. However, if they think you are just a 'kook' tourist out to rent a board, you won't necessarily get the best attention. make sure they know you want lessons.

If you have already gotten past this stage, You can buy a cheap popout longboard, new, for under $600 US. I HATE popouts, but they do have their place as beginner boards and rental boards. Of all popouts, I am most accepting of BICs, which are virtually indestructable.

At the end of the summer, lots of  shops sell off their rental boards, and you can get popouts and softops for REAL low prices. ($200/$300).

I paid just under $700.oo for my 9'4" Allison. That is a fair price for a new, good quality, longboard, although I have seen some over $1K in pricier venues. If you plan to keep the board past beginner stage, it's worth the $700 or so. I am partial to Harbour and Stewart, although I ride an Allison (N.Carolina shaper who makes Excellent sticks). My VERY USED 1969 9'6" Weber Feather is worth around $2,500.

Go to a Surfshop, the best place there is to find out anything about surfing!

  2. second hand you can get one for a couple hundred

new they're pretty expensive.. 300-600 ish

  3. a good cheaper option would be something like a bic.  i got a used one a few years ago for about 200. for a used longboard your looking at paying about 300-400 because of the rising price of oil (surfboards are made almost completely of oil byproducts, the foams and resins are all oil based except for some newer technologies).  prices go up from there, way up.  its not uncommon to see new boards priced at 800, 900, even well over a grand depending on who made it, the size of the board, where youre buying it, etc.  dont buy anything too nice because i can garuntee you will ding it within the first day of having it.  a longboard can be hard to carry arround if your not used to it, so if you ding the nose or the tail dont be too hard on yourself.  good luck

  4. Second hand can range depending on age. This guy sold one for 100 but it was about 4 years old.

A new one can be between roughly 250-450 or higher depending on brands.

  5. Depends where you are, but generally you won't find a used longboard (that you'd want to ride) for less than $300 in the USA.  It goes up from there, whether you buy new or used.  Most used longboards I've seen are closer to $400 and up but the occasional board is cheaper than that.

My board (9'4") cost me a little over $600, new.  It's got a couple of minor dings and one repair to the rail and I can still sell it for nearly what I paid for it.  I've seen new boards for nearly $2000, though most are between $500 and about $1200.

Things to look out for when buying used boards are discolored areas of the board.  If it looks like an old apple that's sat in the sun for a while (that weird brownish yellow color) then it's not a board you want to buy.  Any soft spots, cracks (not surface cracks but deeper) and repaired areas should be warning signs.  (See my "repaired rail" above.  It doesn't have to be a no-go, but thoroughly check the board over if you see any obvious repairs.)  Also, make sure you check anywhere covered by stickers.  Those are often signs of a repair cover up.

    Good luck.
